Zohran Mamdani affirms plans to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, hesitated to declare he would live there right away after his victory in November.
"The choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to focusing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability voters elected me on," Mamdani said in his announcement.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its vibrant immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving there, it will always live within me and my work," he added.
A Contentious Issue
In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his rivals, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his modest Astoria digs.
With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated consistent with the home's original era.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
