New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying these drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
