The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that bring people together. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
