The network's Leading Fresh Series of 2025 Earns a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
