The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Documenting His 20 Days Incarcerated
Nicolas Sarkozy plans a book this autumn titled Notes from a Cell, detailing his experience served in custody.
This news emerged less than two weeks following the ex-leader left prison while he contests the guilty verdict on charges of criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to acquire presidential race money provided by the regime of former Libyan leader.
Prison Experience: Inner Thoughts
“Behind bars one sees little, and nothing to do,” he notes in a preview, implying the book centers around his musings during solitary confinement instead of extensive analysis regarding the packed and crisis-hit jail system in France.
“I forget silence, which is missing in La Santé, where there is a lot to hear,” he adds. “The din is alas constant. However, akin to empty spaces, inner life is strengthened in prison.”
Release Hearing: Recounting the Hardship
At his release request hearing, the former leader was present via screen from his cell, describing his time inside as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I must acknowledge to all the prison staff, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this difficult experience bearable – as it truly is one.”
“I never imagined that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal forced upon me. I confess it’s hard, extremely tough. It has an impact every inmate as it’s exhausting.”
Unprecedented Situation
He, who led the nation from 2007 to 2012, set a precedent as ex-leader from the EU and the initial post-WWII figure of France to be incarcerated.
Before entering jail he declared he would use his time for authoring a memoir.
Cell Library
Unconfirmed is did he manage to read and critique the volumes he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, where a blameless person is sentenced to jail then breaks out to exact retribution.
Prison Conditions
Sarkozy was held in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a cell of about nine sq metres with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison located in the capital. Two bodyguards stayed in an adjacent room.
Sources mentioned that he had eaten solely dairy snacks in prison due to concerns any food may have been contaminated. He had facilities for self-catering but he turned this down, as per accounts. It is uncertain whether Sarkozy will write about meals during incarceration.
Defense Viewpoint
The legal representative, who saw him regularly every day while he was in prison, told the release hearing he would be safer out of prison rather than in custody. “He received threats against his life, heard shouts during nighttime and emergency responses in an adjacent room when a prisoner self-harmed.”
Legal Proceedings
His incarceration began last month following a French court gave him a five-year sentence for illegal collaboration over a scheme to secure campaign funds for his 2007 presidential race.
He denies wrongdoing and has appealed against the verdict, with a new trial is scheduled for early next year.
