New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD issued surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
