Kyiv Strikes Russian Oil Refinery Using British Storm Shadow Cruise Missiles.
In a significant escalation, Ukrainian forces have employed long-range Storm Shadow missiles to strike a key Russian oil processing facility. This strike occurred on Thursday, according to the Ukrainian military command.
Details of the Strike and Military Significance
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk oil plant, was said to be hit, with multiple blasts recorded at the site. This marks not the first instance where Ukraine has deployed these powerful British-supplied missiles to hit targets on Russian soil.
Military spokespersons emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk plant serves as one of the main providers of petrol products in southern Russia and is directly involved in providing for the military of the Russian Federation.
Political Discussions on the Conflict
Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he held “very good” talks with representatives of ex-President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks focused on potential pathways to bring the conflict to a close.
“We had a very productive conversation: many details, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a messaging platform. “There are some fresh concepts on how to move toward a genuine peace closer, and it involves formats, potential summits, and, certainly, the schedule.”
Legal Crackdown Inside the Country
In a parallel domestic matter, a Russian court has found guilty a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the opposition movement, was sentenced to six years in a penal colony.
This case reportedly stem from an online post Udaltsov published backing another group of Russian activists charged with forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has rejected the allegations as fabricated and, following the verdict, reportedly announced to begin a hunger strike in protest.
Foreign Prisoner Situation
Russian authorities has stated it is engaged with French officials concerning the fate of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar currently serving a prison term in Russia and reportedly facing additional accusations of spying.
A spokesperson stated that Russia has presented a proposal to France regarding Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is closely following the situation, with all government services working to provide consular support and push for his release as soon as possible.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was leveled in a 2022 Russian airstrike while hundreds of civilians were sheltering in its cellar, is scheduled to open its doors again. Russian occupation authorities have promoted the reconstruction as a symbol of recovery.
However, previous staff from the theatre have called the reopening as “a macabre spectacle.” This project is part of a broader Kremlin effort to present its administration in occupied Ukraine, a process that includes the arrest or exile of critics and property seizures from local residents.
It is due to reopen by the month's end with a performance of a Russian fairytale, having been rebuilt almost from scratch over the last 24 months.
