People have gathered around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.

The assault led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the conditions of the agreement.

A senior representative familiar with the negotiations said that an night meeting of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.

The official stated the morning session concluded without significant progress, because of differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He commented that the talks are "tough and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but noted that mediators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the both parties.

Essential Issues in Talks

  • An enduring truce
  • The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Future administration of the region

Civilian Reaction

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose family member endured the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No location feels like home now and until each abducted person are released not a single person will be secure."

"Once we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel says 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "We need do every compromise required for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be protected."

Surveys now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the conflict to finish in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Circumstances

At the site of the gathering, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli shelling persisted.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, area and locality districts and in the east side area of the community, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"When the dusk arrives, the dread arrives with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, described.

"My family are afraid of the bombings. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, notably my youngest child who places his head on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the war will return to us."

Health Situation

The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had taken in the remains of six people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated additional dead people had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the southern area, medical staff stated.
