Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
