Christantus Uche Ignites Straightforward Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the last 16, particularly after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their domestic season were no match even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Control Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still scope for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
