California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run
The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he plans to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections are over.
"Yes, I would be lying otherwise," the governor remarked when questioned about giving serious thought to a White House bid post the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."
Newsom's time in office as California's leader ends in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he emphasized that any decision is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Rising Profile as a Trump Critic
He has stepped forward as a high-profile critic of the former president's team, leveraging his digital presence and advocating for a initiative that would boost the party's House seats in following GOP gerrymandering. This action has invited attacks from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend segment on a major news network. Duffy revealed a strategy to pull taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened suspending the state's ability to grant trucking licenses.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," he stated, following a this week's fatal crash in California involving an non-citizen trucker that led to fatalities and injured individuals.
The governor's team noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the worker's status on several occasions, which allowed him to receive a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
Duffy had before indicated he was withholding $40m from California for ignoring linguistic standards for commercial drivers.
Strong Response from the Team
"Former D-list reality star, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a recent comment addressing the funding warnings. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
Polling Data and Political Future
A recently conducted study revealed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters believed that the governor should run for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has increased to an mean of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an typical level of more than 40% to under 40%.
Some time ago, the governor stated while traveling several swing states that he had "no idea" about his plans for 2028.
He noted his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.
"The thought that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I await who presents themselves in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the American people."
