Arrangements for Trump-Putin Talks Postponed Days After Budapest Talks Proposed

Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has declared.

This past week the US president indicated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Budapest within two weeks to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a meeting was not "needed".

The White House declined to provide additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting during a call with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with insiders suggesting the president had urged him to relinquish large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Russia.

However, on this week Trump embraced a ceasefire proposal backed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the war on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he stated.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against halting the current line of contact.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister said on this week, implying that freezing the front line would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the hostilities demanded attention, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a range of maximalist demands that encompass the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently came ahead of rumors that the United States was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he remarked.
