A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the month's conclusion surged in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

However these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in positions right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on non-public details," stated a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other individuals also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A new rule introduced on the start of the week would prevent government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
